Detailed information on Antique Indian Sterling Silver Mughal Rajasthan Rose Water sprinkler

Antique Indian Rosewater Sprinkler Vessel Mughal Jaipur
Height: 10.75 in.
very fine silver rosewater sprinkler.
From India, early 20th century

Embossed and hand chased, engraved and punched decoration to body with floral and geometric Islamic Moorish designs with screw-able top with fluted band, pierced finial. A perfume or rosewater sprinkler that is characterized by a slightly elevated base, a round-shaped body and an elongated neck - the neck decorated with a composition of intertwined vegetal leaf motifs.

Rosewater sprinkling originally was an Iranian custom observed during the festival of Ab Pasthan to invoke the memory of rainfall that put an end to famine. As the tradition of rosewater sprinkling spread to India and further to South East Asia and was adopted by the Portuguese, Dutch and English, it became more generalized. It was used to sprinkle the wedding couple, the deceased and generally to welcome guests.

This fine silver rosewater sprinkler is of solid, chased and pierced silver.

It sits on a pierced, domed, oval foot that is decorated with spiky leaf motifs. The body is of flattened, tear-shaped form which narrows as it rises. The body is chased on both sides in relief with a pair of prancing male lions between a ginger flower motif. The underside of the body is plain but then decorated with a central floral garland.

The shoulders are chased in high relief with leaf motifs. From the body rises a long, narrowing neck decorated with leafy chevrons to indicate water flow. The head of the sprinkler through which the scented water is emitted is presented as a bunch of flowers.

Such sprinklers were used in India at important ceremonies such as weddings. They were also used to scent rooms, and were offered to guests as they arrived at an important home so that they might freshen up after a journey.

Overall, this sprinkler is decorative and sculptural. The silverwork is fine and the sprinkler sits solidly without rocking.

This very elegant and tall rosewater sprinkler is composed almost entirely of fine silver.

It has an oval, pierced foot; a flattened, round-shaped body; an elongated, tapering neck; and a flower-like finial through which the scented water was emitted. The finial is composed of three tiers of filigree ‘petals’ over a row of fruits – perhaps pomegranates.

The sprinkler also has a delightful filigree acanthus-leaf fringe over its shoulder.

The central tear-shaped cartouche on each side of the body comprises filigree arrayed as a floral-like trellis. Elsewhere, the filigree comprises a series of concentric circles in fine, tight curls, within scrolling arabesques.

Related silver filigree sprinklers are in the collection of the Hermitage, St Petersburg. These date to between 1714 and 1750 and once belonged to Catherine the Great. They were considered part of her ‘Indian’ toilet set.

The sprinkler has obvious age. It was acquired in the UK and most probably has been in the UK since colonial times.
